| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | words are used in quick succession and begin with letters belonging to the same sound group. |
| Foreshadowing | use of words or phrases that set the stage for the story to unfold |
| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration |
| Analogy | a relationship based on similarities between two concepts or ideas |
| Consonance | to repetition of sounds produced by consonants within a sentence or phrase |
| Idiom | group of words with a meaning that cannot be understood by the meanings of the words considered separately |
| Imagery | the author uses words and phrases to create “mental images” for the reader |
| Metaphor | a comparison of two things without the use of "like" or "as" |
| Simile | comparison of two things using the words "like" or "as" |
| Irony | the meaning implied by a sentence or word is actually different from the literal meaning |
