Muscle Contraction

| Sarcoplasmic Reticulum | membrane bound structure found in muscle cells. Similar to ER. Main function is to store Ca++ |
| Myofibrils | bundles of very fine cytoskeletal filaments that extend lengthwise |
| Sarcomere | basic contractile unit of muscle fiber. composed of actin and myosin |
| lactate | chemical biproduct of anaerobic respiration. |
| Thermogenesis | Process of heat production in organisms |
| Twitch contraction | brief threshold stimulus produces a quick jerk of the muscle |
| Myoglobin | functions as oxygen storage unit which then will produce oxygen to working muscles |
| Treppe | gradual step like increase in the strength of contraction in a series |
| Tetanus | sustained muscle contraction |
| Syncytium | cardiac fibers form a continuous, electrically coupled mass |
