| Internet | A global network of networks built on open, agreed upon protocols. |
| Protocol | A widely agreed upon set of rules that standardize communication between machines. |
| Networks | A group of two or more computer systems linked together. |
| Bandwidth | The capacity of data transfer in a system. Measured by bit-rate. |
| Bitrate | The number of bits a system can send per second. |
| Latency | The time it takes for a bit to get from sender to receiver. |
| IP Address | A protocol that defines the layout of an Internet address; Internet Protocol Address. |
| IPv6 | A new 128 bit version of the Internet Protocol. |
| IETF | An open community of engineers, designers, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution and smooth functioning of the Internet; Internet Engineering Task Force. |
| DNS | Translates names to IP Addresses; Domain Name System. |
| Domain | A name identifying a particular website. |
| Routing | The process of sending data between two computers on the internet. The data is sent through routers that determine the route. |
| Redundancy | Multiple paths that exist between two points; helps to improve reliability of routing systems. |
| Packets | The units of data that are sent over the network; all data sent over the internet is broken down into these. |
| TCP | A protocol that allows for sending multiple packets between two computers; checks that all packets arrived and that they can be put back together in the proper order; Transmission Control Protocol. |
| Metadata | Information that identifies pieces of data or packets to help control the route of the data. |
| HTTP | A protocol that standardizes the language for talking to web servers to send and receiving web resources; HyperText Transfer Protocol. |
| HTML | A standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages; HyperText Markup Language. |
| URL | An address identifying a resource/webpage that exists somewhere on the internet; Uniform Resource Locator. |
| PTOP | Networks allowing people to share content; Peer to Peer Network. |
| DCMA | Makes it illegal to circumvent anti piracy schemes in commercial software; Digital Millennium Copyright Act. |
| Open Source | Online applications and resources which are available to the general public with very few restrictions. |
| Censorship | Restricting access to ideas and information. |
