Physiology week 1-6
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Homeostasis | the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes. |
DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information. |
Biomolecules | a molecule that is produced by a living organism. |
Cell membrane | the semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell. |
Integumentary system | The integumentary system consists of the skin, hair, and nails. |
Skeletal tissue | skeletal tissue the bony, ligamentous, fibrous, and cartilaginous tissue forming the skeleton and its attachments. |
Articulations | a joint or juncture between bones or cartilages in the skeleton of a vertebrate. |
Muscle contraction | Muscle contraction is the activation of tension-generating sites within muscle fibers. Muscle contractions can be described based on two variables: length and tension. |
Nerve signaling | A momentary change in electrical potential on the surface of a cell, especially of a nerve or muscle cell, that occurs when it is stimulated, resulting in the transmission of an electrical impulse. |
Ligand gated ion channels | Ligand-gated ion channels are transmembrane protein complexes that conduct ion flow through a channel pore in response to the binding of a neurotransmitter. |
