Articulations and muscle contractions

TermDefinition
Syndesmose joints in which fibrous bands (ligaments) connect two bones
Suture found only in the skull and teeth like projections jut out from adjacent bones and interlock with each other with only a thin layer of fibrous tissue between them
Gomphose unique joints that occur between the root of a tooth and the alveolar process of the mandible or maxilla
Synchondrose hyaline cartilage between articulating bones
Symphysis a joint in which a pad or disk of fibrocartilage connects two bones
Excitability One such characteristic is the ability to be stimulated, or irritability
Contractility muscle cells, the ability to contract or shorten, allows muscle tissue to pull on bones and thus produce body movement.
Extensibility the ability to extend or stretch, allows muscles to return to their resting length after having contracted
Satellite Cells stem cells that fuse with myocytes during strength training to make bigger muscle fibers.
T tubules A structure unique to muscle cells is a system of transverse tubules
Triad triplet of tubules (a T tubule sandwiched between sacs of the SR)
Myofibrils bundles of very fine cytoskeletal filaments that extend lengthwise along a skeletal muscle fiber and al-most fill the sarcoplasm.
