Week 6
Articulations and muscle contractions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Syndesmose | joints in which fibrous bands (ligaments) connect two bones |
Suture | found only in the skull and teeth like projections jut out from adjacent bones and interlock with each other with only a thin layer of fibrous tissue between them |
Gomphose | unique joints that occur between the root of a tooth and the alveolar process of the mandible or maxilla |
Synchondrose | hyaline cartilage between articulating bones |
Symphysis | a joint in which a pad or disk of fibrocartilage connects two bones |
Excitability | One such characteristic is the ability to be stimulated, or irritability |
Contractility | muscle cells, the ability to contract or shorten, allows muscle tissue to pull on bones and thus produce body movement. |
Extensibility | the ability to extend or stretch, allows muscles to return to their resting length after having contracted |
Satellite Cells | stem cells that fuse with myocytes during strength training to make bigger muscle fibers. |
T tubules | A structure unique to muscle cells is a system of transverse tubules |
Triad | triplet of tubules (a T tubule sandwiched between sacs of the SR) |
Myofibrils | bundles of very fine cytoskeletal filaments that extend lengthwise along a skeletal muscle fiber and al-most fill the sarcoplasm. |
