What are the two main fuels used in Aviation? | Avtur and Avgas |
What color is 80 Grade Fuel? | Red |
What color is 100 Grade Fuel? | Green |
What color is 100LL Grade Fuel? | Blue |
Avtur gas is used in what type of engine? | Gas-turbine and new diesel |
Avgas is used in what type of engine? | Conventional piston engines |
What is Flashpoint | Lowest temperature at which sufficient vapours above the liquid will ignite without sustaining a flame. |
Integral (Wet-wing) Fuel Tank | Is part of the basic structure of the wing, is sealed on the outside. |
Rigid Removable Fuel Tank | Is installed in a compartment designed to hold the tank, is sealed on the inside. |
Bladder Fuel Tank | Is a reinforced rubber bag place in a non-fuel-tight compartment |
Cross feed | Is transferring fuel from one tank to another |
Collectors Tank | Keeps engine from fuel starvation, which can be caused by sloshing |
How are fuel pumps lubricated? | By the fuel, can over heat if ran dry |
Boost pumps | Are used to reduce cavitation in fuel transfer and priming, used as back up for engine driven pump (are electrical) |
Cavitation | Air pocket, can cause pump damage and interrupt fuel flow |
Vaper Lock | Is caused by fuel starvation, the fuel is heated to much causing the fuel to vaporize and form a bubble that blocks the fuel line. |
Fuel Valves | Used to guide the flow of fuel, must have fuel shut off valve |
Fuel Heaters | Is usually accomplished by some form of heat transfer, ensure the fuel is warmed to optimum operating temperatures |
Fuel Vents | Must be heated or flush mounted to protect against icing conditions. |
What is FAR 25.1553 | Fuel Quantity Indicator- if the unusable fuel supply for any tank exceeds 1 gal or 5%, whichever is greater, a red arc must be marked on its indicator |
What is FAR 29.1557 Section C | What Marking must fuel tanks have: I- the word "Fuel" II- minimum fuel grade IV- maximum pressure for fueling and defueling must be near where you are fueling |
What FAR are fuel tanks in? | Parts 23 and 25 |
What is the advantage of Centrifugal pumps | If the pump is not in operation fuel can still flow through the pump |
What is FAR 25.969 | Fuel tank expansion space, 2% minimum, max doesn't matter |
What is Specific Gravity? | Compared weight of fluid to distilled water at a certain temperature |
Flame Propagation | Refers to the propagation of the reaction zone or “combustion wave” through a combustible mixture. |
Oil-dilution system | Oil congeals in cold weather, the oil is diluted after the engine has been operated and is fully warmed up. |
