Intro to Yearbook
Beginning of the Year
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Closing | Final pages of the book (typically three or more) where the theme is concluded. |
| Colophon | A list of technical printing information about the yearbook including price, number of copies, colors, fonts, photography company, and previous awards. |
| Contents | Listing of the pages containing the opening, sections, index, and closing. Appears near the front of the book |
| Copy | The story. |
| Cover | Outside of the yearbook which protects the printed pages |
| Coverage | Refers to both the topics featured on individual spreads and how the topics are highlighted. |
| Depth (or Jump) Coverage | Using more than one spread for a topic and linking the additional spreads to the first with a headline or similar design. |
| Divider | A spread used to separate each of the sections of the yearbook. It should be related to the theme |
| Endsheet | Heavier sheets of paper which hold the pages of the yearbook to the cover. |
| Flat | One half of a signature |
| Folio Tabs | The page number and spread title, often located at the bottom corners of each page |
| Graphics | Common ones include the use of color, white space, rule lines, large initial letters and special type. |
| Index | A complete alphabetical listing of all students, teachers, advertisers, topics and events covered in the yearbook. |
| Ladder | The page-by-page listing of the yearbook's contents. It is used by the staff to stay organized and to plan for deadlines |
| Opening | The first two to four pages of the yearbook which introduce the theme |
| Section | A traditional yearbook has six: student life, academics, organizations, people, sports, and ads/index |
| Signature | A 16-page grouping of pages. These are folded, stitched, and trimmed to be collated and bound into he yearbook. They are color-coded on the ladder |
| Spine | Connects the front and back covers and includes the title of the book, the school, the year, and the name and edition of the publication |
| Spin-off | A "mini-theme" used as a section title. This helps carry the theme throughout the book. |
| Spread | Two side-by-side pages in the yearbook (pages 2 and 3, for example) |
| Theme | A verbal statement and visual look which tie all parts of the yearbook together. It should fit our school and this year in particular. |
| Title Page | Page 1 of the yearbook. It includes the theme, the school and various other information. |
