Weeks 7-14 Flashcards
Term | Definition |
---|---|
resting membrane potential | the membrane potential maintained by a non-conducting neuron's plasma membrane--usually about -70mV |
local potential | slight shift away from resting membrane potential in a specific region of the plasma membrane |
action potential | the membrane potential of an active neuron |
signal transduction | a process where each different hormone-receptor interaction produces regulatory changes within the target cell |
synergism | a phenomenon where combinations of hormones have a greater effect on the target cell than would the sum of the effects if each were acting alone |
hypersecretion | production of too much hormone by a diseased gland |
perfusion | local pressure gradient needed to maintain blood flow in a tissue |
stroke volume | the amount of blood pumped by one stroke of the ventricle |
cardiac reserve | the amount that cardiac output can increase above the resting value |
Allostasis | the active process used by the body as it attempts to restore typical optimal conditions while under stress. |
