Identity Theft Terms
Term | Definition |

Spyware | Software that enables a user to obtain covert information about another's computer activities. |
Dumpster Diving | An identity thief goes through trash in order to search for documents which contain personal information. |
Firewall | A part of a computer system/network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication. |
Forgery | The action of forging or producing a copy of a document, signature, and/or banknote. |
Fraud | A wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. |
Identity Theft | A fraudulent acquisition and use of a person's private identifying information, usually for financial gain. |
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) | Relating to computer networks in which each computer can act as a server for the others, it allowing shared access to files without the need for a central server. |
Phishing | A fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. |
Shoulder Surfing | Spying on the user of an ATM, computer, or other electronic device in order to obtain their personal access information. |
Snail mail | An ordinary postal system as opposed to email. |
Scams | A fraudulent activity. |
Anti-Virus Software | A computer software used to prevent, detect and remove malicious software. |
Better Business Bureau | A private non-profit organizations that collects and reports information to help consumers make informed decisions when dealing with businesses. |
Federal Trade Commission | A federal agency that administers antitrust and consumer protection legislation in pursuit of free and fair competition in the marketplace. |
Equifax | A consumer credit reporting agency. |
TransUnion | One of the largest credit bureaus present in the United States. |
Experian | A global Credit Bureau |
Internal Revenue Service | It is the division of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that collects internal revenue, including income taxes and excise taxes, and that enforces revenue laws. |
Solicitations | The request for something, usually money. |
Spam | Any irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients. |
