Author | The creator of a work |
Copyright | The exclusive legal right given to creator to print publish, perform film, or record, literary, artistic, or musical, material and to authorize others to do the same. No legal paperwork is required Copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. |
Fair Use 1 | Using copyrighted material for 1. Educational Purposes 2. To criticize or review (like a book or a movie) 3. News reporting 4. Parody (to make fun) |
Fair Use 2 | Fair use requires that you 1. Use a small amount of the copyrighted work 2. Transform the work into something new 3. Does not negatively affect the value of the copyrighted work AND/OR does not take money away from the copyright holder |
Public Domain | Creative items that belong to the public, and are not subject to copyright protection. |
Copyright infringement | A violation of the rights of a copy holder |
Mashup | A new creation made by reusing and combining various portions of music, film audio and graphics |
Parody | An exaggerated, often comical work that takes elements from another work |
plagiarism | the practice of passing off another author's work or ideas as one's own |
Examples of items that can be copyrighted | Music, videos, essays, photos, lesson plans, books |
Examples of items that are in the public domain | Shakespeare's plays, NASA photos, facts, names |
Ideas | Cannot be copyrighted. Ideas are not a "work" |
Consumer | A term for a person who uses goods or services, including online goods and services |
Creative work | The product of creative effort to make something original: pictures, music, video, video games and any kind of writing |
Online content | all the information and media you find online, text, images, video, software, games. |
