Level 1 QUEST

TermDefinition
atmosphere Thin layer of gases that surrounds the planet.
greenhouse Effect Earth's natural heating process that occurs due to gases trapping heat from the Sun.
greenhouse Gases Includes carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor that traps heat released from the surface of the Earth.
troposphere Layer of the atmosphere that contains all the weather and most of the air molecule and pressure.
stratosphere Layer of atmosphere that contains the ozone layer.
ozone layer Layer found in the stratosphere and is made up of a form of oxygen that absorbs most of the dangerous Sun's UV radiation.
mesophere Coldest layer of the atmosphere.
thermosphere Warmest layer of the atmosphere.
exosphere The outermost layer of the atmosphere that extends into space and has the least amount of air molecules and pressure.
air pressure The force of air or gases being pressed or excerted on an object on Earth.
water cycle Process driven by the Sun and gravity in which water is continuously moving between the atmosphere and Earth's surface.
evaporation Process in which liquid water changes to water vapor due to increase heat.
transpiration Process in plants in which liquid water changes to water vapor due to increase heat.
condensation Process in which water vapor changes to liquid water due to decrease heat.
crystallization Process in which water vapor changes to ice due to decrease of heat.
precipitation The falling of water from clouds in the form of rain, snow, sleet, hail, or freezing rain.
clouds Formed due to the process of condensation in which water vapor cools and forms around dust particles or ash in the atmosphere.
cumulus Clouds that are puffy with flat bottoms and can form at high or low elevation.
cirrus Clouds that are wispy, feathery like that have ice crystals and form at high elevation.
stratus Clouds that form layers and spread out in large areas at low elevations.
fog Type of very low elevation stratus clouds.
cumulnimbus Cumulus clouds that vertically stack or develop into towering large layers of clouds. Known as thunderheads.
organism An individual living thing.
autotroph Orgaism that make their own food for energy by photosynthesis.
heterotroph Organism that can not make their own food and must find an external source of food.
respiration Process that takes place in most organisms that releases energy from food.
photosynthesis Process that allows plants and some organisms to make their own food for energy.
stimulus Any change in an organism's surrounding that will cause the organism to react.
response The reaction to a stimuls.
asexual reproduction Process that involves oly one parent and produces offspring that is identical to the parent.
sexual reproduction Process that involves two parents (one male, one female), sex cells (sperm & egg) and produces offspring that has characteristics of both parents.
growth Process in which an organism becomes larger and increase in height, mass, and overall size.
developmemt Process in an organism's life that results in the organism become more complex structurally.
taxonomy The study of how scientist classify organism.
kingdom Level of classification in which organisms are placed based on their abilty to make food and the number of cells in their body.
genus Level of classification that contains closely related organisms and is the first word in the organism's scientific name.
species Level of classification that consists of all the organisms of the same type which are able to breed and produce the same young. Species is the second word in the organism's scientific name.
autotroph Organism that can make its own food by the process of photosynthesis.
vascular plants Plants that have a well developed transport system for movement of water, nutreints, and food. They have true roots, stems, & leaves.
Nonvascular plants Plants that do not have a well developed transport system and lack "do not have" true roots, stems, & leaves.
leaves Plant structures where photosynthesis, respiration,, and transpiration takes place.
stems Plant structure that suppors the plant and hold the leaves up to the light.
roots Plant structure that anchors the plants in the ground and also absorbs water & nutrients.
Seed Plant structure made up of a seed coat, plant embryo, and food storage.
seed coat Seed structure that helps protect the embryo from injury and also from drying out.
