CSU Piaget Occupational Therapy

Sensorimotor Stage is associated with individuals of this age Birth-2 Yrs old
Preoperational Stage is associated with individuals of this age 2 - 6 or 7 yrs old
Concrete Operational Stage is associated with individuals of this age 7-11 yrs old
Formal Operational Stage is associated with individuals of this age 11 and older
Formal Operational Stage (definition) They can solve complex and hypothetical problems involving abstract operations.
Concrete Operational Stage (definition) begins to think logically. Operations are associated with personal experience. Operations are in concrete situation, but not in abstract manipulation.The child begins to think logically. Children can classify objects into several classes
Pre-operational Stage (definition) Children start to use symbols such as language to represent objects. For instance, the child uses symbols, and understands the word “apple” although a real apple is not seen.
Sensorimotor Stage (defintion) The child mainly makes use of senses and motor capabilities to experience the environment. Thinking by ONLY by doing.
Assimilation (definition) When a child perceives new objects or events in terms of existing schemas or operations.
Accomodation (definition) The process of changing internal mental structures to provide consistency with external reality.
Schemas (definition) Includes both a category of knowledge and the process of obtaining that knowledge. As experiences happen, this new information is used to modify, add to, or change existing systems of understanding
Assimilation (example) A child who has only seen small dogs but recognized a St. Bernard as a dog because it has familiar characteristics
Accomodation (example) A child who has only seen small dogs before sees a St. Bernard and this changes what he/she understands about the dogs.
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO... Think of several specific examples. What will this look like when I am observing children? What will I see them DO?
