| Soleplate | The bottom horizontal member of a wall frame |
| Span | The distance between structural supports |
| Crown | The highest point of a curved framing member |
| Floor Truss | An engineered assembly that is used to support floors |
| Foundation | The supporting portion of a structure |
| Header Joist | A framing member that common members are supported by |
| Joist Hanger | A metal Stirrup that supports Joists |
| Live Load | The total of all loads that can be placed upon a structure |
| Precast | Pre made precise structures or fixtures |
| Rough Opening | Pre finished dimension between two units of framing |
| Single Layered | Combined subfloor and underlayment |
| Tail Joist | Short joists that run from an opening to a bearing |
| End Joint | The first and last joists in a floors frame |
| Header | Used to frame floor openings and are usually doubled |
| Rim Joist | Consists of two header joists |
| Lateral pressure | Sideways pressure against a structure |
| Scab | a length of lumber added over a joist to strengthen it |
| Dome Pan | Form used for two way joist systems |
| Long Pan | Form used for one way joist systems |
| Shoring | Temporary bracing used to support slabs while they set |
