| Term | Definition |

| Pay claim | A demand made by employees to their employer for an increase in pay. |
| Inflation | the increase in the cost of goods and services from one year to the next. |
| Trade union | An organisation that aims to protect and improve the the pay and working conditions of its members. |
| ASTI | Association of secondary teachers. |
| Shop steward | Is elected by trade union members in a workplace and acts as the unions representitive in that workplace. |
| ICTU | Irish congress of trade unions. |
| Official strike | Secret ballet is held, One weeks notice if industrial action is given to the employer, strike action is approved by employer. |
| All out strike | All employees go on strike even the ones who dont want to and approval from ICTU is needed. |
| Work to rule | Employees carry out their workplace duties as stated in their contract of employment and their job description.EG. nurses would not carry out cleaning duties. |
| Token stoppage | Employees refuse to work for a short period of time. |
| Overtime ban | Employees refuse to work overtime for their employer. |
| Unofficial strike | Employee taker strike action but do not inform employer or meet any other requirements. |
| Wildcat/lightning strike | Employees take strike without warning employer. |
| Political strike | Employees leave the workplace to protest against the governments actions. |
| Conciliation | The dispute is referred to and independent concilator who listens to both sides of the disputes and tries to get both sides to come to an agreed solution. |
| Mediation | An independent mediator hears both sides of the dispute ands outlines how they think the problem should be resolved.Mediation encourages the employer and employees to solve the dispute together. |
| Arbitration | An independent arbitrator listens to both parties in the dispute and makes a decision on how the problem should be resolved. This recommendation is nit legally binding and can be rejected by one or both of the parties. |
| Trade disputes | This relates to any dispute between employers and employees . |
| Secret ballot | For official industrial action to be taken trade union members must vote using a secret ballot. |
| Minimum notice | Employees must give the employer a minimum of seven days notice befor taking industrial action. |
| Picketing | Takes place at the employees workplace . It involves employees walking outside the workplace carrying placards indicating they are taking strike action. |
| Immunity | The employer cannot sue the trade union or its members for losses incurred by the business due to official strike action. |
| Work relations commission | An independent body that provides a range of industrial relations services to employers and employees. |
| Labour court | Last resort for industrial relations disputes. |
| Misconduct | Unacceptable behaviour of an employee in a workplace. |
| Dismissal | The employer removes the employee from their job as their performance has not improved to their required standard. |
