MAWD Lesson 2.01

Understand digital raster graphics

TermDefinition
Inches The standard unit of measurement for the U.S. and U.S. standard sized papers
Pixels The most common unit of measurement for computer screen display. Generally represented by one dot that is illuminated on a computer screen A precise measurement system for web-design Lacks flexibility as screen sizes change
Points The standard unit of measurement for typefaces 1 point represents 1/72 of an inch 72 pt is about one inch (varies on font desings Starndard size for print paragraphs =12 pt
Picas One pica = 1/6 of an inch. Six picas per inch Often used in print design, since it is easliy divisible. Picas work well when applying the Rule of Thirds
Em space
Percentage
Resolution Measure of amount of detail that is stored in a digital image Higher resolution means higher quality
PPI (pixels per inch) Resolution is measured in PPI, or pixels per inch Higher ppi= better quality= larger file size
On-screen Resolution Monitors are low resolution devices, most display 72 ppi. Additional image resolution will increase file size, w/o affecting display quality
Print Resolution The resolution at which printers can print is measured in Dots Per Inch Printers are high resolution devices and require high resolution images in order to print images clearly w/o pixelation or blurriness
DPI (dots per inch) Resolution at which printers can print is measured in DPI
RGB Assigns an intensity value to each pixel ranging for 0 to 255 for each of the red, green and blue components in an image If all RGB values are 0, you get black If all RGB values are 255, you get white
CMYK Assigns a percentage value for each of the process ink. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black If all percentages are set to 0, the result is white, if all % are set to 100 the result is black
Aspect Ratio Relationship of an object's width to its height
Cropping Cutting out part of an image Original image retains same file size Cut image can be saved as new object
Layering Compiling multiple pictures or objects together into one image Layers can be turned on or off Elements can be colored, layered, and resized individually
Selections Identifying a specific area of a layer or image that allows you to move or apply techniques to only that specific are on that specific layer
Transforming Changing a graphics size or dimensions through commands such as scaling and rotating Scaling- enlarging or shrinking a graphic Rotation- pivoting an object around its center point
Layer Styles One or more effects applied to a layer or layer group. Effects include shadows, stroke, glows, bevels, and overlays
Layer Masks A non-destructive method which allows you to apply transparency to a specific portion of a layer with precise control
Transparency Removing the background color of a raster image making it "see-through" in order to allow the image to blend in with its background
Fill Putting a color, gradient, pattern, or texture into an object or area
Gradient Filling an object with a smooth transition from one color to another EX: Dark blue gradually becoming white Red fading to orange
Adjustment Layers Non- destructive layers that can be added to allow you to apply image tonal and color adjustments
Filters Used to apply special effects to an image that would be too difficult to create manually EX of use: A weaving pattern Liquefying
Clone Stamp Samples and area of an image and then allows you to paint over another area of the image with the sampled area. EX of use: Remove blemishes on a model's skin Brush up text on a scanned image
Blend Modes Change the way layers interact by determining how a layer will blend with the layers below it

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
