Understanding digital raster graphics

| Pixels | Most common unit of measurement for computer screen displays |
| Points | Standard unit of measurement for typefaces, 1/72 of an inch |
| Picas | One sixth of an inch, easily divisible |
| Em space | Current point size of a font |

| Resolution | Amount of detail stored in a digital image |
| PPI | Pixels Per Inch |
| On screen Resolution | Low resolution devices, additional image resolution increases the size of the image file |
| Print Resolution | High resolution devices, require high resolution so that the picture is printed with good quality |
| DPI | Dots Per Inch |
| RGB | Red, Green, Blue |
| CMYK | Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black |
| Aspect Ratio | Relation of an object's width to its height |
| Cropping | Cutting out part of a graphic or image, retains file size |
| Layering | Putting multiple objects together into one image |
| Selections | Marks out a specific area that can be edited separately from the rest of the image |
| Transforming | Changing the size or scale using commands |
| Layer Styles | Effects applied to a specific layer or layer group |
| Layer Masks | Making only a specific part of a layer transparent |
| Transparency | Removing the background color from a raster, makes it "see through" |
| Fill | Putting a color, pattern, texture or gradient into a specific object or area |
| Gradient | Smooth transition from one color to another |
| Adjustment Layers | Apply tonal and color adjustments to a layer |
| Filters | Apply specific effects to an image automatically |
| Clone Stamp | Copying a specific area of an image and allowing you to paint over other areas with that area |
| Blend Modes | Determine how layers will blend with one another |
