Understand digital raster graphics

TermDefinition
Inches The standard unit of measurement for the United States, and U.S. standard sized papers.
Pixels The most common unit of measurement for computer screen display,
Points The standard unit of measurement for typefaces.
Picas One pica equals 1/6 of an inch.
Em space Used to define the current point size of the font
Percentage Defining sub elements of a web page as a percentage to the width of the entire web page, allowing for responsive layouts as screen sizes change.
Resolution A measure of the amount of detail that is stored in a digital image.
PPI Pixels per inch (the number of pixels contained in one inch.
On-screen Resolution Small file size, does not need a high resolution
Print Resolution Needs a larger file size, need a higher resolution
DPI Dots per image, refers to the clarity of an image due to the dots of ink that makes up the picture.
RGB Assigns an intensity value to each pixel ranging from 0 to 255 for each of the red, green, and blue components in an image.
CMYK Assigns a percentage value for each of the process inks. Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
Aspect Ratio Relationship of an object's width to its height.
Cropping Removing a part of an image.
Layering Compiling multiple pictures or objects together into one image.
Selections Used to isolate parts of an image to change just those parts without affecting anything else.
Transforming Changing a graphics size or dimensions through commands such as scaling and rotating.
Layer Styles Special effects you apply to a layer to affect the appearance of the layer's contents.
Layer Masks Method that allows you to selectively hid or reveal parts of a layer.
Transparency Allows the background color of an image to be replaced or changed so that the graphic can blend into the background.
Fill A color, patter, or gradient that is applied to the inside of an object.
Gradient A graduated blend between two or more colors used to fill an object or multiple objects.
Adjustment Layers Non-destructive layers that can be added to allow you to apply image tonal and color adjustments.
Filters Used to alter the look of an image and give it a special appearance by applying special effects.
Clone Stamp Samples an area of an image and then allows you to paint over another area of the image with the sampled area.
Blend Modes Change the way layers interact by determining how a layer will blend with the layers below it.
