Understanding Digital Raster Graphics

TermDefinition
Inches Standard unit of measurement in the US; it’s on a ruler.
Pixels Most common unit of measurement for computer screen display
Points Basic unit of measurement for typefaces; 12 __.
Picas One of this is equal to 1/6 of an inch.
Em space the same as an __ dash, only now as a space. Named after the Capital M in early printing
Percentage uses this symbol to measure:%
Resolution The measurement of the amount of detail that is stored in a digital image
PPI “Pixels Per Inch”; the number of pixels contained in one inch.
On-screen Resolution How an image looks on a computer
DPI Dots Per Inch; measures resolution of an image
RGB Color mode that is used best for images displayed on a monitor or webpage; Red, Green, Blue
CMYK Color mode that is best used for printed images; Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black
Aspect Ratio The relationship between the height and width of an object
Cropping Changing the borders of an image with the intention of cutting it
Layering Compiling multiple pictures or objects together into one image
Selections Finding a specific area of a layer that allows you to move/apply techniques to it
Transforming Changing the size or dimensions of a graphic through commands (ex: scaling and rotating)
Layer Styles One or more effects applied to a layer group (ex: shadows, stroke, etc.)
Layer Masks A non-destructive method that allows you to apply transparency to a specific portion of a layer with precision
Transparency To make the background color of a graphic eliminated so that the background behind it can be seen
Fill Applying a color, gradient, pattern, or texture into an object or area
Gradient Filling an object with a smooth color transition
Adjustment Layers Non-destructive layers that allow you to apply image tonal and color adjustments
Filters Used to apply special effects to an image; think of snapchat
Clone Stamp Samples area then allows you to paint over the image; used for things like blemish fix
Blend Modes Change the way layers interact by determining how a layer will blend with the layers below it
Print screen Resolution How an image looks on a printed paper
