Digital Raster Graphics

TermDefinition
Inches an inch, like the unit of measurement of length
Pixels many little squares that combine to make up a photograph
Points Unit of measurement used to determine the size of font, leading,etc.
Picas Unit of type size. 12 points or 1/6 inch
Em space Scalable unit used to determine point size. 12 ems = 12 points
Percentage measure of proportion, usually length and width in proportion to the size of an image originally or the size of the canvas
Resolution Sharpness or clarity of an image, determined by number of pixels used
PPI Pixels per inch. measure of resolution on-screen.
On-Screen Resolution resolution, measured by PPI, of a graphic on a computer screen
Print Resolution Resolution, measured in DPI, of a printed graphic.
DPI Dots per inch. Used as a reference to the amount of dots on a printed sheet of paper per inch
RGB Red Green Blue. addetive color model used for computer graphics that is centered around creating a multitude of colors based around a mixture of red,green, and blue, each of the 3 colors represented by a number from 0 to 255
CMYK Subtractive color model best used for print graphics. utilizes 4 the 4 colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, in order to create different colors.
Subtractive Color model combining the 3 main colors lead to the creation of black rather than white.
