Understanding digital raster graphics

Inches A unit of measurement
Pixels A single point in a graphic image
Points Marks a position in space
Picas A unit of size and length equal to 12 points(about 1/6 of an inch
Em Space Used to define current point size o f the font
Percentage A piece of a whole
Resolution The detail an image holds
PPI Refers to the fixed number of pixel that a screen can display and the density of the pixels
On screen resolution The number of pixels that can be displayed on a computer monitor
DPI Refers to the output resolution of a printer
RGB The colors to be used on a computer display (red, green, blue)
CMYK A color model in which all these colors are described as a mixture of these four(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black)
Aspect Ratio An images width divided by its height.
Cropping Removing part of an image
Layering Compiling multiple images into a single image
Selections Identifying a specific area of a layer or image that allows you to move or apply techniques to only that specific area
Transforming Changing a graphics size or dimensions through commands such as scaling and rotating
Layer Styles One or more effects applied to a layer or layer groups
Layer Masks A non destructive method which allows you to apply transparency to a specific portion of a layer with precise control

Fill Putting a color, gradient, pattern, or texture into an object area
Gradient Filling an object with a smooth transition from one color to another
Adjust Layers Non destructive layers that can be added to allow you to apply image tonal and color adjustments
Filters Used to apply special effect to an image that would be too difficult to create manually
Clone Stamp Samples and area if an image and then allows you to paint over another area of the image the the sampled area
Blend Modes Change the way layers interact by determining how a layer will blend with the layers below it
