Term | Definition |

Copyright | The legal protection for a creative new work against being copied, once that work is recorded. Cannot apply to an idea or procedure. |
Creative work | An idea or artwork recorded in digital or hard copy form |
Creative Commons | A specific kind of copyright that allows others to copy, share, and improve on your work, if credit is given to you. |
License | A definition of copyright where you can set rules as to how others can use your work. |
Plagiarize | Using or slightly changing someone else's work without giving them credit. |
Public Domain | Creative work that is free for all to use however they want, because the rights to it have been given away or have expired. |
Fair Use | The ability to use small parts of someone's copyrighted work, for purposes like education, journalism, criticism, etc. |
Domain | A section of the Internet, like .com, .net, .gov, .edu, or .org |
DNS (Domain Name Server) | A computer that acts like a directory or phone book for the Internet |
Search Engine | A website that uses an algorithm to help filter through searches for information on web pages to make it easier to find information |
Infringement | To violate someone's copyright by illegally copying, displaying or giving away someone else's work. |
Query | A search request, usually made of keywords or natural language questions. The more keywords or more specific the question, the better your results. |
Relevant | Something directly related to your search |
+peanut | the word "peanut" must appear in the results. This must be relevant to your search. |
-peanut | the word "peanut" must NOT appear in your results. This must be irrelevant to your search. |
"peanut butter and jelly" | the phrase "peanut butter and jelly" must appear in your search results |
hits | the number of search results you get--the fewer, the better |
primary sources | historical documents from the time of a specific event |
server | a computer that provides and manages services to the Internet like email, search, and files |
client | a computer that people use to access Internet services |
smtp server | a computer that routes outgoing email |
domain name | whitehouse.gov, ccsd.net, or yahoo.com |
recipient | the account that an email is sent to |
IP address | a unique number that works as an address on the Internet for a computer |
IM (instant messaging) | a communication service that allows users to more directly send text messages to each other than email |
