Term | Definition |

Industrial Relations Act 1990 | This was introduced to improve industrial relations in Ireland and to help to resolve industrial relations disputes. |
Legal trade disputes | Pay and working conditions, Discrimination against an employee, Dissmissal of an employee. |
Illegal trade disputes | Disagreement about how the business is run, Discontent about how the government is running the country, Closed-shop agreements eg. insisting that employees join a particular trade union such as SIPTU. |
Trade disputes | This is a disagreement between employers and employees. |
Secret ballot | This must be held before the strike action. |
Minimum notice | 7 days before the strike action, employees must give this to their employers. |
Primary picketing | Employees walk outside of their workplace with placards indicating they are taking a strike action. |
Secondary picketing | Employees take the strike action outside another employer’s workplace. Only time this is legal is if the employer who’s workplace you are taking the strike action outside of, gave the employees’ employer help when they were striking. |
Immunity | This means employees can not be sued because they went through all the legal procedures. |
