Terms used in Mobile CSP Unit 2 activities

TermDefinition
Internet the underlying global network that supports the WWW and many other applications. It consists of many different local networks connected together by various hardware devices. A global public network of independent, autonomous networks governed by TCP/IP.
HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer Protocol the set of rules that governs the WWW application.
WWW - World Wide Web a system of interlinked resources -- documents, images, sounds, videos, data files -- that are stored on the Internet and can be accessed through a browser. An application of interlinked web pages based on the HTTP protocol.
Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW).
Berners-Lee felt the WWW brought the Internet to a higher level of abstraction.
Protocol a system of rules that govern the behavior of some system.
Browser a program that displays web pages and is used to navigate the WWW.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) the suite a protocols that determine the behavior of the Internet.
International Engineering Task Force (IETF) they develop and oversee open standards such as HTTP (www) and SMTP (mail)
Open Standard a standard (such as TCP, HTTP) that is not owned or controlled by a private entity. It stands in contrast to 'proprietary' materials', which are owned or controlled by a private entity. They fuel the growth of the Internet!
the Cloud a popular term for the Internet and its applications used largely in marketing and advertising.
Cloud Applications Internet applications like Facebook, Google, Twitter, Dropbox and App Inventor
