| Term | Definition |

| Character | Any single letter, number, symbol, or punctuation mark. |
| Character spacing | The spacing in and around each character of text. |
| Character styles | Are applied to individual characters or words that you select. They have an italicized lowercase a next to them. |
| Font | A typeface that applies a style to characters. |
| Live preview | What it would look like in that font. |
| Paragraph styles | Format is applied instantly to all text in the paragraph where the insertion point is located, whether or not that text is selected. |
| Point size | The height of characters, with one point equaling approximately 1/72 of an inch |
| Text Effects | Distinctive appearance to the selected text, such as an outline, glow, shadow, and reflection. |
| WordArt | Creates decorative effects with text. |
