Word Lesson 1 Understanding Word
Term | Definition |

Backstage View | A screen that appears when you click the File tab in Word 2016. |
Block Style | A format that has open or mixed punctuation and is common to many business documents. |
Command | An instruction based on an action performed in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box. |
Dialog Box | Displays additional options or information you can use to execute a command. |
Dialog Box Launcher | A small arrow in the lower right corner of the group that you click to launch a Dialog Box. |
Groups | Collections of related Word commands. |
I-Beam | When the cursor is placed near the Insertion Point, it changes to a capital I. |
Insertion Point | The blinking point in the upper left corner where you begin creating your text. |
Menu | A list of options associated with them that you click the drop down arrow to display. |
Mixed Punctuation | Requires a colon after a salutation and a comma after the closing. |
Nonprinting Characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands, such as paragraphs, indents, tabs, and spaces between words. |
Open Punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing. |
Preview | Gives you an opportunity to see what your printed document will look like , so you can correct errors before printing. |

Quick Access Toolbar | Located above the ribbon and contains commands that users use most often. |
Repeat | A command that repeats your last action. |
Ribbon | Contains multiple commands on separate tabs. |
Save | Clicking the save button opens the Save As screen, and you need to specify the file name and the location where the document will be saved. |
Save As | Makes users able to save work to the cloud and access the document quickly. |
Settings | Used to control document specific print parameters. |
Tabs | Enables you to create, open, save, close, print, and view information about your documents. |
Template | A master document with predefined page layouts, fonts, margins, and styles that are used to create documents with the same formatting. |
Undo | Lets you cancel or undo your last Word command or action. |
White Space | Space between pages of the document. |
Word Wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the next margin. |
Mini Toolbar | A small toolbar with popular commands that appears when you point to selected text. |
