Word Lesson 1 Understand Word

| Backstage View | A tool that offers quick access to commands for performing many file management tasks all displayed in a single navigation pane that can be customized to meet users' needs. |
| Block Style | Aligns text along the left margin, including the date, inside address, salutation, body of the letter, closing, and signature. |
| Command | An instruction based on an action that you perform in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box. |
| Dialog Box | A box that displays additional options or information that you can use to execute a command. |
| Dialog Box Launcher | A small arrow in the lower-right corner of the group that you click to launch a dialog box. |
| Groups | Collections of related Word commands, makes up a tab. |
| I-Beam | When you place your cursor near it, the insertion point changes to a large "I" |
| Insertion Point | The blinking "point" where you begin creating your text in the upper-left corner of the document. |
| Menu | A list of options. |
| Mixed Punctuation | Requires a colon after the salutation and a comma after closing. |
| Nonprinting Characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands, such as paragraphs, indents and tabs, and spaces between words. |
| Open Punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing. |
| Preview | Allows you to see what your printed document will look like. |
| Located on the File tab in Backstage. Provides printing options, including printer properties and settings. | |
| Quick Access Toolbar | Located above the Ribbon and contains commands that users access most often. |
| Repeat | Repeats you last action. |
| Ribbon | Contains multiple commands on separate tabs. |
| Save | Saves any changes on document. When clicking on it for the first time, it will open the Save As screen. |
| Save As | Appears as a command listed in Backstage view when you click the File tab. Requires you to specify the filename and location where the document will be saved. |
| Settings | Allows you to control specific details of the document. |
| Tabs | Contains several groups. |
| Template | A master document with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents with the same basic formatting. |
| Undo | Lets you cancel or undo your last Word command or action. |
| White Space | The space between pages of the document. |
| Word Wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the right margin. |
| Mini Toolbar | A small toolbar with popular commands that appears when you point to selected text. |
