Lesson 1 Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Backstage View | a screen that appears when you click the File tab in Word 2016; containing commands for managing the backstage view |
| Command | an instruction based on an action that you perform in Word by clicking a button or entering into a command box; on the RIBBON |
| Dialogue Box | a box that prompts the user for additional information when executing a command |
| Dialogue Box Launcher | a small icon on the RIBBON that opens up a dialogue box related to that group |
| Groups | collections of related Word commands |
| I-Beam | when you place your cursor near the insertion point, it changes to a large "I" |
| Block Style | format aligns text along the left margin, including the date, inside address, salutation, body of the letter, closing, and signature |
| Insertion Point | the blinking point in the upper-left corner of the document; where you begin creating your text |
| Menu | a list of options |
| Mixed Punctuation | requires a colon after salutation and a comma after the closing |
| Non-printing Characters | symbols for certain formatting commands, such as paragraphs, indents and tabs, and spaces between words |
| Open Punctuation | requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing |
| Preview | the preview pane gives you an opportunity to see what your printed document will look like, so you can correct errors before printing |

| Quick Access Toolbar | located above the RIBBON; contains commands that users access most often |
| Repeat | clicking the repeat command repeats your last action |

| Tabs | a label section of a RIBBON that contains a group or related tools |
| Template | a master document with a predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents with the same basic formatting |
| Undo | the undo command lets you cancel or undo your last Word command or action |
| White Space | the space between pages of the document |
| Word Wrap | automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the right margin |
