Understanding Word

| backstage view | a tool that offers quick access to commands for performing many file management tasks all displayed in a single navigation pane that can be customized to meet users' needs |
| block style | Aligns text along the left margin |
| command | An instruction users give in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box |
| dialog box | a box that displays additional options or information you can use to execute a command |
| dialog box launcher | A small arrow in the lower right corner of the group |
| groups | Collections of related Word commands |
| I-beam | The large āIā that is created when you place your cursor near the insertion point |
| insertion point | Where you begin creating your text; should be in the upper left corner of the document |
| menu | List of options |
| mixed punctuation | Requires a colon after the salutation and a common after the closing |
| nonprinting characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands that can help users create and edit documents |
| open punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing |
| preview | Enables you to view your document as it will appear when printed |

| quick access toolbar | Contains commands that users access most often; located above the Ribbon |
| repeat | Repeats your last action |
| ribbon | Contains multiple commands on separate tabs |

| settings | an option that enables users to set document preferences |
| tabs | eight areas of activity on the ribbon that contain groups or collections of related word commands |
| template | Master document with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents with the same basic formatting |
| undo | Lets you cancel or undo your last Word command or action |
| white space | Space between pages of the document |
| word wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches the right margin |
| mini toolbar | a small toolbar with popular commands that appears when you point to selected text |
