Understanding Word
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Command | An instruction based on an action that you perform in Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box. |
Backstage View | The backstage view is a place where you can perform operations on the file. |
Block Style | Aligns text along the left margin, including the date, salutation, closing, and signature. |
Mixed Punctuation | Requires a colon after the salutation and a comma after the closing |
Open Punctuation | Requires no punctuation after the salutation or the closing |
Dialog Box | A box that contains more information or additional options relating to the group it was opened from |
Groups | Collections of related word commands |
Dialog Box Launcher | An arrow in the lower-right hand corner of each group that opens a dialog box |
I-Beam | The shape your cursor makes when it is near the insertion point. |
Insertion Point | The place where you begin creating you text |
Menu | A central launching point for other places or functions |
Nonprinting Characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands |
Preview | Gives you the opportunity to see what your document will look like printed |
Sending your document to a printer to receive a hard copy | |
Quick Access Toolbar | Located above the Ribbon and contains commands that users use most often |
Repeat | Repeats your last action |
Ribbon | A user interface located below the quick access toolbar that contains tabs. Each tab contains different groups of commands |
Save | A button that, when pressed, saves your document |
Save As | A button that allows you to change the filename and location of your document |
Settings | Allows you to change specific things for your document |
Tabs | Locations with specific groups of commands relating to the certain tab |
Template | A master document with predefined page layout, fonts, margins, and styles that is used to create new documents with the same basic formatting |
Undo | A command that lets you cancel or undo your last action in word |
White Space | Space between pages of the document |
Word Wrap | Automatically wraps text to the next line when it reaches right margin |
