Ethics and Sources of Law Terms

| administrative law | Body of rules created by government agencies |
| case law | The law as established by the outcome of former cases; based on appealed cases |
| english common law | Result of custom-based laws being unified by courts in England |
| ethics | Moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity |
| greatest good | Examines whether the action will cause the greatest good for the greatest number of people |
| law of precedent | Legal case that establishes a principle or rule |
| statutory law | Required, permitted, or enacted by statute |
| the golden rule | “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; treat others the way you want to be treated |
| consequential ethical reasoning | Consequences of one’s conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness or wrongness of that conduct; evaluates the alternative to the situation |
| rule based ethical reasoning | Reasoning that is based on determining if acts are right and wrong; fundamental ethical rule |
| ethics as reflected in U.S. laws and the U.S. constitution | Laws are judged to be right or good when they affect the majority of the people in a positive manner |
| department of homeland security | Prevent terrorist attacks within the United States |
| drug enforcement agency (DEA) mission | Enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States |
| executive branch | Enforces the law; the President and the Vice President |
| federal bureau of investigation (FBI) | Uphold the law through the investigation of violations of federal criminal status |
| judicial branch | Interprets the law; US Supreme Court |
| legislative branch | Makes laws; US Senate and House of Representatives |
| North Carolina state bureau of investigation (SBI) | Division of the NC Department of Justice; assists local law enforcement with criminal investigation |
| North Carolina state highway patrol | Reduce collisions and make the highways safer |
| police departments (local) | Enforce the laws and statutes of the state |
| United States marshal service | Apprehend federal fugitives; protect the federal judiciary; operate the Witness Security Program; transport federal prisoners |
