Ethics, sources of law, and legal systems
Term | Definition |

Administrative Law | Laws that regulate bureaucracy. |
Case Law | Law based on judge's opinions rather than statutes. |
English Common Law | Law in England based on precedent. |
Ethics | Principles that guide behavior. |
Greatest Good | Providing for the greatest number of people. |
Law of Precedent | Issue decided by a court that will guide future cases. |
Statutory Law | Laws explicitly written into effect. |
The Golden Rule | "Treat others as you wish to be treated" |
Consequential Ethical Reasoning | The consequences of ones actions will judge whether or not they take those actions. |
Rule Based Ethical Reasoning | Acts are judged without regard for their consequences. |
Ethics as Reflected in U. S. Laws and the U. S. Constitution | Connected to enlightenment era philosophy. Ex) John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Montesquieu, Voltaire, etc. for the good of the greatest number of people |
Department of Homeland Security | Perform anti-terrorism and secure the country's borders. |
Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) | Enforces controlled substances laws. |
Executive Branch | Enforces laws approved by the legislative and judicial branches. |
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) | Federal Bureau under the Department of Justice that investigates domestic issues. |
Judicial Branch | Interprets laws presented by the judicial branch. |
Legislative Branch | Creates laws to be sent to the judicial and executive branches. |
North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) | Investigates issues in North Carolina. |
North Carolina State Highway Patrol | Patrols the highways of North Carolina to enforce driving laws. |
Police Departments | Enforces laws. |
United States Marshal Service | The police on a federal level. |
