Excel Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Active Cell The cell in your worksheet that has been selected. It will have bolder gridlines around it.
AutoFill Copying a cell's contents and/or formatting into an adjacent cell or range.
AutoSum A function that automatically identifies and adds a range of cells in your worksheet.
Cell The rectangular shaped area on a worksheet that is created by the intersection of columns and rows.
Cell Address The name of the cell is determined by the name of the row and the column intersection, such as A8.
Column In a worksheet, the vertical spaces with headings A, B, C and so on.
Formula A combination of numbers and symbols used to express a calculation.
Formula Bar A command line above the worksheet where text, numbers, and formulas are entered into a worksheet.
Headings The identifying letters and numbers for columns and rows. Columns are identified with letters, rows with numbers.
Sheet Tabs Tabs you see at the bottom of your workbook file, labeled Sheet 1, Sheet 2, and so on. You can rename the tabs.
Workbook An Excel file that contains individual worksheets. Also called a spreadsheet file.
Worksheet A "page" within an Excel workbook that contains columns, rows, and cells.
Clear To remove all the formatting applied to a cell or range of cells.
Chart A visual representation of numerical data, which can be in the form of lines, bars, wedges in pies, or other graphics.
Currency Format Allows you to set the format of the cell to a dollar value.
Fill Handle The green square in the lower-right corner of the active cell or range that you drag over the cells you want to fill.
Merge To combine multiple cells into one cell.
Rows Appears horizontally in the worksheet; identified by numbers on the left side of the worksheet window.
Wrap Text To move data to a new line when the cell is not wide enough to display all the contents.
Embedded Chart A chart that is placed on a worksheet rather than on a separate chart sheet.
Move Pointer The pointer used to drag and drop cell contents to a new location. Has arrows pointing all four directions.
Editing Pointer This pointer appears when you are clicked inside a cell and ready to type.
Normal Pointer This pointer is used to select cells. It looks like a plus sign that is not filled in.
Fill Pointer This pointer is used to fill adjacent cells. It looks like a plus sign.
Home Ribbon This ribbon has the font command group. It is where we work most often.
Letters These are used to name the columns.
Numbers These are used to name the rows.
