Design Vocabulary

Learn the basic terms design professionals use.

TermDefinition
Focal Point The part of a room (space) that immediately grabs your attention.
Hue Another word for color.
Monochromatic When different values (light and dark) are used with one color.
Greying When black is added to a color.
Tinting When white is added to a color
Shading When grey (black and white) is added to a color.
Space Anything that is being decorated.
Symmetry This type of balance is achieved when both sides mirror each other.
Contemporary Style It means "in the moment"
Vignette When a group of items are displayed. The items can be a variety of shapes, textures, colors, and heights.
Antique An item that is at least 100 years old.
Primary Color One of three pure colors. All other colors are made from them.
