Design Vocabulary
Learn the basic terms design professionals use.
| Term | Definition |

| Focal Point | The part of a room (space) that immediately grabs your attention. |
| Hue | Another word for color. |
| Monochromatic | When different values (light and dark) are used with one color. |
| Greying | When black is added to a color. |
| Tinting | When white is added to a color |
| Shading | When grey (black and white) is added to a color. |
| Space | Anything that is being decorated. |
| Symmetry | This type of balance is achieved when both sides mirror each other. |
| Contemporary Style | It means "in the moment" |
| Vignette | When a group of items are displayed. The items can be a variety of shapes, textures, colors, and heights. |
| Antique | An item that is at least 100 years old. |
| Primary Color | One of three pure colors. All other colors are made from them. |
