QuestionAnswer
Identify 2 differences between a WAN and a LAN (Local Area Network) WAN - Large geographical area LAN - Small geographical area WAN - External hardware - multi ownership LAN - Internal hardware - organisations tend to own
What is meant by a 'network protocol' Standards and rules to govern how data is transmitted over networks
TCP/IP is a set of protocol based on layers. With regards to network protocols, define what is meant by 'layer' A division of network functionality - each layer has a job. A layer is a group of protocol which have a similar function.
Describe one advantage of using layers to construct network protocols They are self contained functions, they work independently of each other. Separation of concerns, they only talk to the layer above or below it. A layer can be taken out and edited without effecting other layers.
Explain four reasons why a small bakery may use a star topology for their LAN 1 - Easy to add a new device 2 - Central Management 3 - If a device fails the rest of the network is unaffected 4 - Better performance - data goes straight to the central device so all devices can transmit data at once, unlike a ring network
Describe two differences between IP addresses and MAC addresses IP - Not linked to the hardware. they are assigned before the device can access the network MAC - assigned to all network-enabled devices and are unique & cannot be changed IP - either 32-bit or 128-bit binary MAC - either 48 or 64-bit hexidecimal
State two benefits of a LAN Sharing files is easier, network users can access the same files, at the same time and copy files between machines Can share the same hardware like printers User accounts can be stored centrally, users can log in from any device on the network
Explain two advantages of a law firm storing their data in the cloud. 1 - Users can access files from any connected device 2 - Storage is easy to increase 3 - No need to pay for expensive hardware or staff to manage it 4 - Cloud Software will be updated automatically 5- Cloud host provides security and back ups
Describe a Star toplogy All devices are connected to a central switch or server that controls the network.
Describe what is meant by failover and justify the need for failover in the network Redundant components / hardware / capacity (server/hard-disk) router) built-in to the network in case of failure within the network or increased demand.
Explain two measures a school will need to take to ensure the security of their LAN 1 - Use a network policy to set the rules and procedures for all users to follow to ensure the network is protected against attacks and unauthorized access. 2 - Use anti malware software and firewalls to prevent virus attacks and unauthorised access

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
