System Software KO

TermDefinition
System Software Software designed to run and maintain a computer system – the most important one is the Operating Software (OS)
Operating System (OS) THE BOSS OF THE COMPUTER SYSTEM! A complex piece of software found on most computer systems
Virtual Machine A software computer that, like a physical computer, runs an operating system and applications. Comprised of a set of specification and configuration files and is backed by the physical resources of a host.
Utility Programs Helps maintain or configure a computer. Many useful utilities are installed with the operating system but extra utility software can be installed to perform additional tasks
Device Drivers Lets the OS and hardware talk to each other. Operating systems use device driver software to communicate with internal hardware or peripherals connected to the computer … a driver lets a computer speak to a mouse!
Multitasking The OS makes it possible to run several programs at once = Multitasking The OS helps the CPU carry out multi-tasking by managing memory and CPU processing time
Time Slice A short interval of time allotted to each user or program in a multitasking or time sharing system. Typically in milliseconds.
Processor Management An Integral part of the operating system (OS). The OS must allocate resources to processes, enable processes to share and exchange information, protect the resources of each process from other processes and enable synchronization among processes.
User Interface Allows the user to interact with a computer system
Graphical User Interface A visual way of interacting with a computer using items such as windows, icons, and menus, used by most modern operating systems. They are designed to be easy to use for everyday users and have specific input methods such as finger swiping
Command Line Interface Text based. The user enters specific commands to complete tasks. They are less resource heavy than GUI's and more efficient and powerful than GUI for advanced users. They can be used to automate processes using scripts (simple programs)
Peripheral Management Defined as a computer device, such as a keyboard or printer, that is not part of the essential computer (i.e., the memory and microprocessor). These auxiliary devices are intended to be connected to the computer and used.
File Management The organisation of data in to a usable hierarchical structure. It also deals with the movement, editing and deletion of data.
Applications A software program that allows a user to perform a specific task.
BIOS Basic input output system - the basic firmware that is embedded in the computer ROM chip used to start a computer.
Motherboard The circuit board inside a computer that houses the CPU, memory and connections to other devices.
RAM Random access memory. This is volatile memory that is constantly being written to and read from. It does not retain its contents without a constant supply of power. When a computer is turned off, everything stored in its RAM is lost.
Swap File a Microsoft Windows hard disk drive file (HDD) that provides virtual memory to its OS and programs and supplements the system's existing solid state physical memory.
Process (Task Manager) A Windows feature that provides details about programs and processes running on your computer. It can provide you with details on current programs, and see which programs have stopped responding.
Permission The authorisation given to users that enables them to access specific resources on the network, such as data files, applications, printers and scanners.
Full Back-up Where a copy is taken of every file in the system. They often use a lot of storage space and can take a long time to create but is faster to restore from
Incremental Back-up Where only the files created or edited since the last backup are copied. They use less storage space and are much quicker to create.
Back up a copy os a computer system's files and settings stored internally. Data can be recovered in the even of data loss.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
