Osmotic Solutions
Different Osmotic Solutions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Hypertonic Solution | A solution where the concentration of particles outside the cell has MORE solute than the concentration of particles inside the cell |
Hypotonic Solution | A solution where the concentration of particles outside the cell has LESS solute than the concentration of particles inside the cell |
Isotonic Solution | A solution where the concentration of particles outside the cell has THE SAME solute than the concentration of particles inside the cell |
Predict where water will move in a HYPERTONIC solution | Water will move OUT OF THE CELL, and the CELL SHRINKS |
Predict where water will move in a HYPOTONIC solution | Water will move INTO THE CELL, and the CELL SWELLS |
Predict where water will move in a ISOTONIC solution | Water will move BOTH INTO AND OUT OF THE CELL, and the CELL SHAPE STAYS THE SAME |
