Networks - Part 2

TermDefinition
Coaxial Cable A transmission media that consist of a central wire, surrounded by insulation and a shield of braided wire to minimise interference
Router Connects together different networks and forwards data packets along a network.
Wireless Access Point A device that allows other devices to connect to a network using standards such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Switch Filters and forwards data packets within a single network. This creates a direct connection between devices (intelligent)
Twisted Pair Cable The least expensive transmission media that consists of two wires that wrap around each other. Used as a standard (ethernet)
Network Interface Card A hardware device internal to a computer that allows a computer to connect to a network.
Fibre Optic Cable A transmission media that consists of a bunch of glass or plastic threads
Hub A connection point for devices in a network. Unintelligent - packets are broadcast to every device.
LAN Local Area Network connected over a small geographical area - eg School
WAN Wide Area Network connected over a large geographical area - eg Banks / Internet
Network Computers linked together
Ethernet The cable used to connect computers together
Internet Worldwide collection of computer networks that are connected together (Is an example of WAN)
PAN Personal ~Area Network - devises connected in 1 location - not always connected to the internet
DNS Server Domain Name Server containing a list of domain names and their associated IP address
Hosting A web server where people can store their websites to allow others to see it
The Cloud A network of servers that allow software and data to be stored
Virtual Network A network of specified computers can communicate with one another. Several virtual networks can share the same physical connections and hardware without a user knowing that the others exist. These virtual networks can make up a LAN.
VPN Virtual Private Network is a virtual network used to protect the information being shared. Companies can create these to provide an intranet.
Packet Data transmitted over a network is broken down into packets. Each packet contains the address of the sender and the address of the receiver (IP addresses)
WAP Wireless Access Point - Allows for wireless devices to connect to a network (either LAN or WAN) Includes connections through Wifi and Bluetooth WAPs provide Internet access in public places (often known as Wi-Fi hotspots)
Router An interconnection device used on networks to connect two or more devices.
Switch An interconnection device that connects two or more devices together and helps in solving the issue of data collisions
NIC Network Interface Card This allows a computer to connect to a wired network
Transmission Media Different cables that allow connections to a network
Bandwith The amount of data that can be transferred at a given time e.g. 500mbps - The greater the bandwith the better the network performance
Bandwith Shared between users of a network - too many users or heavy use such as streaming may cause the network to slowdown

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
