Keyboarding terms
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Alternate Key | executes commands with other keys |
Arrow Keys | moves the cursor in the direction indicated by the arrow on each key |
Backspace | removes the character to the right of the cursor |
Caps lock | capitalizes all letters when locked down |
Control Key | executes commands with other keys |
Delete | removes the character to the right of the cursor |
Enter/Return | causes the cursor to move to the left margin and down to the next line |
Escape Key | closes a software menu or dialog box |
Gross Words a Minute (GWAM) | the number of standard words keyed in one minute |
Home Row | the keys where you place your fingers to begin keying |

Keyboarding Posture | correct seating position taught when developing typing skills |
Shift Key | makes capital letters and certain symbols when used with those keys |
Space Bar | inserts space between words and sentences; only key that is typed with the thumbs |
Hand Position | fingers on home row keys, curved, ready to tap correct key |
Words Per Minute (WPM) | number of standard words typed in one minute |
Word | equal to 5 characters/spaces; used to calculate GWAM and WPM |
