Elementary Art

Terms and definitions for review and practice

TermDefinition
Art Medium The type of tools that artists use to create their pieces of art work.
Background The part of the artwork that looks furthest away.
Birds-Eye View When it looks like we are looking down from above.
Blend Mixing two or more colors together.
Close-Up A very close view of an object or subject.
Cool Colors Blue, green, and purple. These colors bring the feeling of being cold, places, and feelings.
Foreground The piece or part of the artwork that looks closest to you.
Landscape A piece of artwork that is of the land like mountains, trees, and fields.
Mood The feeling created in a work of art.
Portrait A piece of art showing a person, an animal, or a group of people that is usually focused on the face.
Primary Colors Red, Blue, and Yellow
Secondary Colors Green, Orange, and Violet
Realistic A piece of artwork that looks very real.
Sketch A quick drawing usually to explore an idea or a medium.
Thumbnail A small drawing usually used to prepare for a larger project or piece of art.
