Drama Terms

drama means action; a literary genre consisting of works in which action is performed and all words are spoken before an audience by an actor or actors impersonating characters; lacks narrator
closet drama subgenre of drama that is intended to be read
verse drama type of drama written in verse rather than prose
realism an attempt to depict real life focusing on the middle class; movement in 19th century Europe
foil character a character designed to illuminate another character
narrator or chorus comments or describes the happenings
aside a short speech said on stage where character pretends others don't hear
soliloquy a long speech said on stage where character pretends others don't hear
tragedy a play that portrays a serious conflict and ends in disaster
comedy a literary work that amuses an audience; produces a happy ending
proscenium arch an arch over the front of a stage; serves as a frame for the action onstage
thrust stage a stage design that allows the audience to sit around three sides of the major acting area
arena stage a stage design in which the audience is seated all the way around the acting area; actors make their entrances and exits trough the auditorium
amphitheater a theater consisting of a stage area surrounded by a semicircle of tiered seats
subplot double plot
classical unities derived from Aristotle's Poetics, a play has one plot, that occurs in one place, in one day--action, time, place
skene costume building; dressing area
orchestra a circular level, chorus stands
deus ex machina any force that resolves plot
