Lesson 1 Key Terms

| block style | format style that aligns text along the left margin |
| backstage view | tool that offers access to commands for performing file management tasks, displayed in single navigation pane that can be customized to user’s needs |
| command | instruction users give Word by clicking a button or entering information into a command box |
| dialog box | box that displays additional options or information you can use to execute commands |
| groups | Collections of related Word commands |
| I-beam | large “I” created when users place the cursor near the insertion point |
| insertion point | blinking point at the upper-let side of the document where you will begin creating your text |
| mixed punctuation | style that requires colon after salutation and comma after closing |
| non-printing characters | Symbols for certain formatting commands that help users create and edit documents |
| open punctuation | style that requires no punctuation after salutation or closing |
| preview | tool that enables users to visually check document for errors before printing |
| quick access toolbar | toolbar that contains commands to use more often, such as Save, Undo and Redo |
| repeat | command that repeats user’s last action |
| ribbon | tool that is divided into eight that contains groups |
| save as | dialog box that will save a document in a specific format |
| settings | option that enables users to set document properties |
| tabs | Eight areas of activity on the Ribbon that contain groups or collections of related Word commands |
| template | Master document that has predefined page layouts, fonts, margins, and styles and in used to create new documents that will share the same basic formatting |
| white space | space between pages in a document |
| word wrap | tool that automatically wraps text to the next line as it reaches that right margin |
