Grammar Basics

Preposition A word or group of words that shows direction, location, or time, or introduces an object
Noun A word that identifies a person, place, thing or idea
Verb A word that describes an action, state of being, or event
Adverb A word that modifies or describes the quality of a verb, adjective or another adverb
Adjective A word that modifies nor describes the quality of a noun
Clause A group of words that includes at least a subject and a verb
Phrase A group of words that acts as a single part of speech
Independent Clause A clause that can stand alone
Dependent Clause Clause that can not stand alone
Noun Clause A depeclause that acts like a noun
Adjective Clause A dependent clause that acts like an adjective
Adverb Clause A dependent clause that acts like an adverb
Pronoun A word that takes the place of a noun
Subject Who or what the sentence is about
Subjective Pronoun Pronouns that take place of subject in the sentence
Object The thing that something happens to
Object pronoun A pronoun that takes the place of an object
Possessive Pronoun Shows that something belongs to someone
