Chapter 1 Term & Definitions

TermDefinition
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) Worldwide telephone system that handles voice-oriented telephone calls.
Regional ISP An ISP that provides Internet access for customers in a specific geographical area.
Responsive Web Design (RWD) Design techniques to help create websites that adjust layout and, in some cases, content, to the device and screen displaying the webpages.
Robot Search engine software that automatically browses the web looking for webpages to add to the search engine's index.
Script A program written in a scripting language used to make webpages dynamic and interactive.
Scripting Languages Programming languages used to write short programs, called scripts, that execute in real time at the server or in a web browser.
Search Directory A search tool that categorizes webpages and whose index is built by human interaction.
Search Engine A web-based search tool that locates a webpage using a word or phrase found in the page.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) The art and science of designing a webpage to increase the potential that the page will appear high in a search engine's search results list.
SEO Expert The member of the website design team who creates and revises the text that visitors read when they visit a website, and who chooses the links, images, video, or other media that enhances text content.
