These terms are poetry characteristics and devices.

| assonance | resemblance of sounds, also called vowel rhyme |
| consonance | repetition of consonant sounds |
| enjambment | continuing a sentence without pausing |
| ballads | a poem or song telling a story in short stanzas |
| odes | a lyric poem for a specific subject |
| lyric poetry | poetry that expresses personal thoughts, feelings, emotions |
| alliteration | using words with the same sound at the beginning like " |
| blank verse | verse without rhyme |
| haiku | Japanese poem with seventeen syllables (in three lines of five, seven, and five) |
| sonnets | poetry with fourteen lines using any of a number of formal rhyme schemes |
