| Consumer | A person who buys goods and servicse for their own use. |
| Proof of purchase | Shows that a consumer has paid for items. |
| Contract | A legally binding agreement between two or more people. |
| Barcode | A series of vertical lines that can be read by a scanner that give information about a product. |
| Guarantee/Warranty | A written promise from a manufacturer to redress faulty goods within a given period. |
| Distance selling | Sale and purchase of goods and services that does not take place in person. |
| Trade associations | Represent businesses in a particular trade. |
| Office of the Ombudsman | Investigates complaints from members of the public against public bodies. |
| Small claims | District court judge listens to case, costs €25. |
| ASAI | Promotes good advertising standards in Europe. |
| CCPC | Investigates and enforces consumer and competition law. |
| CAI | A voluntary advice and information service for consumers. |
| Infringed | To break the terms of an agreement, rule or law. |
| Redress | Compensation when rights are infringed - replace, refund, repair. |
| Competition | Rivalry between the sellers of goods and services to win consumers' business. |
