What are two types of exterior conditions? Those that have an acute onset and affect the exterior and those that affect the channels which have a slower more chronic on set
If a person tends to be deficient of Qi and blood the pattern is considered to be? Empty in character
If an exterior factor invading the channels is chronic it causes? Painful obstruction syndrome (Bi syndrome)
The pattern is defined as being interior when it affects the what? The deeper levels of the body; internal organs, Qi, blood
What are some causes of internal syndromes? Developed from exterior syndrome, external pathogenic factors Can directly invade the interior, emotions, diet, overworked, stress
External pathogenic factors can directly invade the interior through what organs? Cold can invade, The stomach the uterus or the intestines
The main sign and symptom of a disease that has moved from exterior to interior is? The disappearance of aversion to cold and the onset of aversion to heat, fever becomes stronger.
Some other signs and symptoms that a disease has moved from the exterior to the interior are? Restlessness, thirst, dark urine, constipation, red tongue with yellow coat, and rapid pulse
Restlessness and cough are signs of what? Heat
Transmission from interior to exterior syndrome Will have what indications? A rash and blisters appears on the skins or through treatment restlessness and coughs become less after sweating
Other signs of full (excess) heat are? Skin eruptions, painful burning sensations, loss of blood with large quantities of dark red blood.
In regards to the mind, any condition of extreme restlessness or manic behavior indicates what? Heat in the blood
What is the etiology of internal full heat or excess heat? Overconsumption of hot energy foods, emotional stress or by external pathogenic factors penetrating to the interior and turning into heat

If Qi stagnate for a very long time the heat that is produced will eventually turn into? Fire
Full heat or excess heat is a manifestation of? Excess Yang

What does exterior cold/full cold cause when it penetrates directly into the intestines? Diarrhea and abdominal pain
What does exterior cold/full cold cause when it penetrates directly into the uterus? Acute dysmenorrhea
What is the etiology of full cold? Excessive consumption of cold energy foods, or external cold invasion
From the Yin Yang point of view empty cold arises from what? Yang deficiency
When does empty cold develop? When Yang is weak and fails to warm the body
What is the most common cause of empty cold/yang deficiency? Spleen yang deficiency
Why does spleen need Yang ? Warmth to perform its function of transformation and transportation of food
When spleen is deficient of Yang, food is not transform properly and what will occur loose stools
What is the etiology (cause) of empty cold/yang deficiency? Excessive physical work, diet/too much cold food, excessive sexual activity/kidney yang , internal cold injuring Yang

What occurs when a patient has a cold condition/yang deficiency and is attacked by wind heat ( exterior) Exterior heat and interior cold
What are the signs and symptoms of exterior heat and interior cold? exterior heat invasion (fever, sore throat, thirst, headache, floating rapid pulse) w/interior cold signs (loose stools, chills, no thirst, profuse pale urine)
What are some patterns of combined heat and cold? Since heat tends to rise you can have the pattern where heat is above and cold is below.
Spleen yang deficiency and liver fire are an example of? Combined heat and cold
And example of combined heat and cold is? Kidney yang deficiency and damp heat in the bladder
