ascender the portion of a letter that extends above the baseline of a font
descender the portion of a letter that extends below the baseline of a font
points the smallest unit of measure
strokes A straight or curved diagonal line used to create typeface
line guage wooden or brass ruler graduated in picas and/or agate lines
letter form a letter's shape
baseline the imaginary line upon which a line of text rests
pica a typographic unit of measure corresponding to approximately 1⁄6 of an inch, or 1⁄72 of a foot
leading the spacing between the baselines of type
bleed the area to be trimmed off after a document is printed
kerning the spacing in between individual characters
