| Term | Definition |

| ascender | the portion of a letter that extends above the baseline of a font |
| descender | the portion of a letter that extends below the baseline of a font |
| points | the smallest unit of measure |
| strokes | A straight or curved diagonal line used to create typeface |
| line guage | wooden or brass ruler graduated in picas and/or agate lines |
| letter form | a letter's shape |
| baseline | the imaginary line upon which a line of text rests |
| pica | a typographic unit of measure corresponding to approximately 1⁄6 of an inch, or 1⁄72 of a foot |
| leading | the spacing between the baselines of type |
| bleed | the area to be trimmed off after a document is printed |
| kerning | the spacing in between individual characters |
