Review of computer hardware and software Part 1

What is a computer? An electronic device that manipulates information or data.
What is the part of your computer that has a physical structure, such as the keyboard or mouse? It also includes all of the computer's internal parts. Hardware
What is any set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do? It is what guides the hardware and tells it how to accomplish each task. Software
What are the two main styles of personal computers? PC and MAC
What are the basic parts of a desktop computer? Computer case, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord
What is inside the computer case? Motherboard, central processing unit, and power supply
What is the Esc key? It allows you to stop a function or action
What are the Function keys? Shortcuts for common tasks
What does the Tab key do? Creates indents in word processing programs; also, used to switch between field in a spreadsheet
What does the Backspace key do? Erases the character to the left of the cursor
What does the Delete key do? Erases the character to the right of the cursor
What does the Insert key do? Switches between insert mode and overtype mode
What do the Home and End keys do? Moves the cursor to the beginning or end of the current line
What do the Page Up and Page Down keys do? Scrolls a document or webpage up or down
What are USB ports? Used to connect almost any type of device, including mice, keyboards, printers, and digital cameras; on front and back of computer
What is the Ethernet Port? Port for networking and connecting to the internet
What is located inside the computer and sometimes referred to as the "brains" of the computer? Processor
What is the job of the central processing unit? To carry out commands
What are the two most well-known processor manufacturers? Intel and AMD
What is the computer's main circuit board called? Motherboard
Where on the computer is software installed? It's also where your documents and other files are stored. Hard drive
What type of memory is RAM? Short term
What type of storage is provided by the hard drive? Long term
What are the advantages of having a fast hard drive? The computer can start up and load programs faster.
What does an operating system do? Manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware.
What does CPU stand for? Central processing unit
What does the CPU do? Sends signals to control the other parts of the computer
How are operating systems for mobile devices different than those for desktop and laptop computers? They aren't as fully featured and able to run all of the same software
