morality values that govern a society's attitude toward right and wrong (thoughts)
ethics means for determining what a society's values ought to be (rules)
honesty character trait of a person who is open and truthful in dealing with others
justice ability to treat all people fairly
compassion sympathy towards the difficulties of others
integrity willingness to do the right thing regardless of personal consequences
law system of rules of conduct established by the government of a society to maintain stability and justice
constitution document that spells out the principles by which the government operates (federal and state)
common law decisions of the early law courts developed in England, based on customs. They are characterized by the practice of deciding cases on precedent.
precedent a judge is required to follow an earlier court decision when deciding a case with similar circumstances. Also called the doctrine of stare decisis.
statute law specifically passed by a governing body that has been created for a stated purpose.
legislature the body of lawmakers of each state, or country, that is responsible for making statutory laws.
unconstitutional any action of law that goes against the United States Constitution
administrative law rules and procedures that are established by regulatory agencies
3 methods of making ethical decisions (1) feelings & opinions, (2) greatest good, (3) golden rule
4 ethical character traits (1) honesty, (2) justice, (3) compassion, (4) integrity
5 sources of law (1) constitution, (2) statutory law, (3) common law, (4) court decisions, (5) administrative regulations
