| x-axis | the principal or horizontal axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates. |
| y-axis | the secondary or vertical axis of a system of coordinates, points along which have a value of zero for all other coordinates |
| category axis | When you create a chart from worksheet data that uses dates, and the dates are plotted along the horizontal |
| value axis | Related data points that are plotted in a chart. Each data series in a chart has a unique color or pattern and is represented in the chart legend |
| plot area | The plot area is surrounded by the chart area. The chart area on a 2-D chart contains the axes, the chart title, the axis titles, and the legend |
| tick marks | A check mark, checkmark or tick is a mark (✓, ✔, etc.) used (primarily in the English speaking world) to indicate the concept |
